How's that possible? One word: "fees." Several years back the voters of the state said "screw these taxes!" and voted for $30 tabs. It didn't quite work out due to legal technicalities, but then Governor Gary Locke, knowing that the "torch and pitchfork" crew was on its way to Olympia put through paperwork to create our $30 tab.
Unfortunately for the whole idea, the legislature in Olympia is under the impression that their constituents are these:

There are several fees now attached to my "$30 car tab." "Oh, these are not taxes," they'll claim, "they're only fees!" Fees that only occur along with taxes and cannot be opted out of... yeah.
The one that really pisses me off is the fee for new license plates.
Every five years, we now get to shell out money for new license plates, supposedly to replace our "worn out" plates. And for another $20 dollars, the nice folks in Olympia will even allow us to keep our current license plate numbers!
RIDICULOUS! First off, I don't need new plates. Mine don't even have a scratch on either one! Second, I'm glad I own my car so that after my license plate number changes (because you can be DAMN sure I'm not paying $20 for this nonsense!) that I only have to tell my insurance company the new number, not a bank, credit union, loan shark, etc.
This is tax payer harassment. And what do we get for it? Craptastic roads.
It's definitely time to dump some tea into the harbor. The legislators of this state seem to think that we are just here for the fleecing. We tell them what we want, they ignore us and do what they want anyway.
Until then, I guess I'll get back to work. There are useless, parasitic mouths to feed in Olympia after all!
