I got home after midnight last night following the three hour drive from Pullman, Washington to Walla Walla, Washington. It was one of those "tired, but accomplished" evenings.
The lease on my former residence there is set to expire next Saturday, May 31st, so I made the trip back there to meet up with some of my former roommates and get the place cleaned up. Each of us has $350 on deposit with the property management company overseeing the house. It's an amount that's worth putting in the effort to defend and reclaim (especially from people so undeserving of it as the people who run this particular property management company!).
It was a full day of sweeping, moping, scrubbing, vacuuming, discarding, and topping it all of with running a carpet steamer. Even though the home is not mine and I'm glad to be gone from it, it was nice anyway to see the place slowly become clean and inviting again. The new residents should be pleased with it... at least until they get a load of the scant IQ points possessed by their new landlords.
Pullman landlords generally trend toward the "slumlord" side of the spectrum, and it's all too common for entire damage deposits to be gobbled up by frivolous and outright false cleaning and repair claims. The property management company my former roommates and I were dealing with is notorious for acting in this way, so I'm keeping myself in "fingers crossed" mode for now. If I do recover something from my deposit after all of this, however, it's going right into my Forex account. After over a decade of being a renter, I'm going to put some of the last of the money I used in that way to work for me now instead. With the 33.77% interest I'm currently receiving, maybe I'll recover all of the rent I've paid out over the years eventually.

Yeah, I've dealt with a lot of those gobble-up-deposit landlords when I was living in a college town. They're good at taking advantage of people.
