Striving for Failure

Recently I blogged about how I was planning on getting back into a regular workout routine to improve my physique, health, and energy levels. Well, I've decided to give up. See, lately the Democrats have been harping about how drilling for more oil won't solve anything to do with our present energy crunch because it will take a long time to get results. I got to thinking about this and I said, "gee... it's going to take a long time to get results from working out, so I had better quit. It's better to do nothing now than it is to get a payoff down the road."

If only I had thought of this before all that other stupid stuff I've done, like serve all four years of my enlistment in the Army, nearly four years of undergraduate study for my BA, two years of graduate study for my MA, working in pest control for an entire year so I could get a raise... I've got all that stuff now, but wow! What a stupid thing to do, spending time on all that stuff that takes time to get!

Yes, I'm kidding. You really think I would listen to Democrats? Hah!

So, the title of this post: I don't have a lot of time for working out, so I look for ways to make the most of the time I do have. What I'm doing now is "going for failure" - when I lift, I do each lift until I simply can't anymore in three sets. This makes the first set really long, the second less so, and the third the shortest. I'm going for overload in the muscle groups targeted to get them to adapt by growing. More muscle fibers means a higher overall metabolism, and this will get me where I'm trying to go. Since placing this kind of stress on one's muscles repeatedly can damage them if overdone, I figure the one to two times per week that I have the time to work out like this should be about right (plenty of rest and recovery in between sessions, in other words).

So that's what I was up to just before sitting down to type this. I can already feel a small endorphin rush, which is what I used to get as a reward when I had a regular routine going. Hey... that sounds like instant results - Dems, take note.
