I had that thought the last time I tried tweaking my blog's layout - I don't mean adding an element or two, I mean getting into the HTML behind it all and fundamentally reworking it. For the most part I did a decent job, I think, but it was a time consuming thing to do and more than a little frustrating.
I don't have any formal training in web design, which is the reason I have difficulty with this stuff from time to time. That's why if I were making serious money doing this stuff, I'd probably turn the website creation effort over to professionals such as Network Solutions Web Design Services.
I found Network Solutions at random, but I'll be keeping them in mind for future possibilities. With prices ranging from $500 to $1400 for a site design, they're not cheap, but the work they've put into their products could easily justify the price (in fact, on the higher end of the price range, you would be getting a custom built site based on your ideas). You get to work one-on-one with an expert designer who will stay in contact with you throughout the process to make sure that you get what you want in your website. They can even provide hosting for your site for a low monthly fee, making this an all-in-one package (if you want - you can host somewhere else if you so choose).
Like I said, I don't think I'm anywhere near the point of needing anything like this, but maybe this blog will eventually grow into something more. If I get to that point, I'm sure that writing up content would be the best way for me to spend my time, and paying someone else to handle the web design might turn out to be the best way to save my time. I've got these guys bookmarked, just in case.
