Off The Road Again

I'm home after my weekend trip to Madison, Wisconsin for things Jewish. It was fun and all, good to see relatives I haven't seen since... actually, since the last Jewish thing we did in Wisconsin. It was also great to be able to spend time with my friend, Jim, in Port Orchard, Washington and finally get a chance to step into his backyard observatory the evening before departing for Madison.

We males of the Italian half of my lineage got together at the Italian Workmen's Club in Madison for imported Italian brew and antipasto (we're Venetians, and the club was apparently founded by Sicilians - the rounded emblem in the middle of the building bears the name of Sicily - but we managed to sneak in and out again without any knife fights or anything). That was a good time.

The bat mitzvah afterparty was lots of fun, too. It was held in the Madison Children's Museum, which certainly provided a colorful and lively setting (my guess is that my cousin's daughter, Rosa, picked it out for her party). The caterers laid out a feast of Thai inspired cuisine and there was plenty of good wine and microbrew beer on hand for the event (too bad that a bat mitzvah only gets to be an adult in the Jewish community but not an adult in the eyes of our states in this regard!). The next morning it was brunch at my cousin's home and then it was off to the airport.

All in all, it was a pretty good trip.

But traveling itself... not so much. I definitely like being where I'm going, but I really hate getting there. I want someone to invent teleporters so I can just get to where I intend to go. I'd much prefer to skip the part where you sweat bullets in the cabin of a plane that isn't getting off of the ground for various reasons, other drivers who think their role on the highway is to box you in behind them and other slow drivers, problems that arise that, when one is on the road, they can only be fixed by throwing money at them, etc. If I can skip all that, I'd be a very happy and frequent traveler.

So it's good to be home. And now I can get back to work on this blog...
