(2008-09-07) — Sen. Barack Obama told ABC’s George Stephanopolous on Sunday that he considered joining the military when he left high school in 1979, but declined when he learned that the Vietnam War had ended some four years earlier, and that the first Persian Gulf War wouldn’t start for another 11 years...
The Democrat presidential nominee, in a surprising revelation not mentioned in either of his two memoirs, said, “I actually always thought of the military as an ennobling and, you know, honorable option, but since we weren’t at war, I thought, why bother getting ennobled if you can’t run through a hail of hot lead, or charge up a hill with a bayonet between your clenched teeth and plant Old Glory on the summit...”
Sen. Obama told Mr. Stephanopolous that he had also considered being an Alaskan commercial fisherman and moose hunter, like Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, because “I liked the idea of being a bold adventurer on the American frontier, killing my own food and surviving the harsh elements...”
This of course is a parody of an interview that Barack Hussein Obama gave in which he claimed he would have joined the military when he graduated high school in 1979, only there wasn't a war going on, so he didn't.
What a load of crap.
When I first read this, I realized immediately what Obama is attempting to do: he wants to build a myth about himself, that he would fight for this country.
Then I thought about it some more, and while he may be going for that, I now think it's mainly about something else. Obama made this claim because he has seen how much respect Senator McCain gets because of what he went through in Vietnam, and now Obama wants us to believe that he's actually just as tough as McCain is. Obama wants us to think that if there had been a war, any war, he would have jumped right in. Obama probably wants to believe this about himself, too... just without any actual military experience and the physical and mental tests that come with it.
I can hear his Obamabot supporters now: "But he thought about getting military experience! He meant to! That's just as good as the real thing!"
And that's what I love about this ScrappleFace parody of the whole affair. It makes fun of the obvious load of bull Obama is trying to feed everyone, and it points out that Sarah Palin is cut from tougher cloth than Obama, too. Too bad for Obama that he didn't come up with hypothetical moose hunting before Scott Ott did.

Thanks for bringing this up. I was travelling out of state this Sunday and heard nothing about his statement.
This is absolutely incredible; not that he said it but that some people believe him. It's the Obama equivalent of "I smoked but I didn't inhale."
The man has never risked life or limb for the sake of another human being, and he wants to be President?
He thought about joining the military, but there wasn't a war so he decided to organize communities in Chicago?
If McCain doesn't pounce all over that, he's a fool.

Oh, I believe Obama! I also believe that Hillary Clinton tried to enlist in the Marines!

It would be great if Hillary were still in the running when Obama made his "enlistment interest" claim. Then maybe we would have been treated to a hypothetical arms race, or an arms race of hypotheticals.
I need to find the "testosterone poisoning" radio bit that was being played on the air here in Walla Walla during breaks in Rush Limbaugh's show. It was poking fun at Hillary's "sniper" incident in the Balkans. :)
