I got an email yesterday from the folks behind Entrecard, the little widget that's off to the right of my blog here. Entrecard is a quick and easy way to build traffic for your blog or website - other Entrecard users come by to drop their "card" on your widget to earn credits, which of course necessitates a visit to your site to do so. If you place your Entrecard widget on the first page of your site (sometimes termed, "above the fold", the portion of your page visible without needing to scroll down) and if your site loads quickly, you can find yourself on lists of "fast drop" sites. My blog has gotten on to a few of those lists and I benefit from the increased traffic.
The credit system in Entrecard is simply driven by activity. You drop, or people drop on you, and when people buy advertising time on your widget, you get credits. Because credits are created by dropping, the supply of them has been unlimited. As a result, the people who run Entrecard report that there are tens of millions of credits in the system, meaning "credit inflation" is rampant.
What will happen now is that 50% of the impressions - the number of times the widgets are loaded and displayed across the network - will be sold to 3rd party advertisers. Entrecard users will then be able to sell their Entrecard credits directly to Entrecard. How much that will be per credit remains to be seen, but this valuable blogging tool just became even more valuable.
