Help Others Save With Unsigned Cards

Today is my sister's birthday, and unless the U.S. postal service has let us down, she should have received the card and check I sent her as a gift. If not, it will get there eventually, but it's nice when the gifts arrive a little early or on time.

When I was putting her gift together, I was about to put pen to paper and sign my name in the birthday card that I got for her. I stopped and didn't sign it, however, because at that moment I had an idea. I'm sure many have thought of this same thing before, so I'm not going to claim to be the first to think of this (but maybe I am, who knows?). I didn't sign the card so that it could be used again by my sister when someone else's birthday comes up. Instead, I put "Happy birthday!" on the memo line of the check.

The card cost a bit less than $2 as I recall, but for the recipient, that's $2 saved (a little extra gift!). It could even be considered a bit of recycling since the card won't end up in the trash and in a landfill somewhere. All you have to do is put your message on a little piece of paper instead of the card itself. When you receive unsigned cards, just put them away somewhere and go through them when you need to send someone a card.
