My New Blu-Ray Player and Netflix

Amongst my Christmas gifts this year there was a Samsung blu-ray disc player. I've been wanting to see Terminator Salvation, so last night I finally got around to renting a blu-ray disc, and I can attest to the purported quality of the video output these devices are made to deliver. I've heard the first-time viewing experience described as being like getting glasses, and I agree. On my 50" HD plasma screen television the picture quality is just amazing. I forsee many an evening parked on the couch in my future.

I checked out blu-ray options on Netflix and learned that I have to pay an additional $2 per month to get them through that service. I turned that down and went to the video store.

Where the rest of this post is going, in one word: oops.

It turned out that a one week rental at the local video shop I went to is $7! Netflix can deliver dozens of the things to me over the course of 3.5 months for that amount of cash. For far less money, I won't have to drive somewhere to get my blu-ray discs, I won't have to drive back again to return them, and the front end of my car won't scrape the pavement because the driveway into the parking lot of the store is too steep (adding insult to injury - now that sells!). What are brick and mortar business owners thinking?!

So now I have an upgraded Netflix subscription. I'm going to go load up my queue with high definition blu-ray awesomeness.
