This puts the continuation of my individual privatization of Social Security in question. I'm fine with that though, since I've never treated those additional funds as part of any discretionary spending in my budget. I want to continue using the holiday to fund a Roth IRA as I've been doing, but I won't be hurt by the expiration of this holiday, should that come to pass.
I agree with the rebelling Republicans here: a two month extension is a joke, another wad of uncertainty packed into the giant spitball of fiscal doubt that our present government keeps piling on us all. Not me, specifically, as I already know what I would do with that two month extension, but what if you're considering trying my plan? One year isn't much to work with, but two months makes it too much of a hassle to consider. If you do get started and the holiday does last for just two more months, you get nowhere. If you don't get started and they do extend this thing one more year, then you've lost two months. Maybe you could set the money aside over the next two months and wait and see. Then you need a separate place to keep it set aside... But then if it turns out you won't open a retirement account with it because two months doesn't amount to much, you might by then have missed a deal on something you want or need... What to do, what to do... (That's the problem in a nutshell.)
